Styling The Bigger Guy, Non Loafer-Loafers and Chore Jackets
Styling tips for my bigger guys, shoes that give loafer without being a loafer, and chore jackets I love.
Another early newsletter. Oops. Sorry, but I am planning on making a video about the first half of this newsletter for TikTok today so I thought my Substack deserved it first. So the first half of this letter is free for obvious reasons, but the second half is recs with links for my paying supporters.
Styling Tips For The Bigger Guy
I have been getting so many questions about styling tips for guys with a bigger build. I have a few videos on my TikTok page about this, but its spring and almost summer so lets do a little update, shall we.
Vertical stripes or pinstripes should be your BFF
Its not a revolutionary concept that vertical lines have a slimming effect. You all know this. SO USE THEM. Especially in this current era of them being so trendy. Wear them in shirt form, pant form or if you’re feeling bold - with both.
V is key
Learn how to create the V shape with your looks. Creating a V shape on your body is such a great styling hack to achieve the slimming effect. For example, wearing things like camp collar shirt, polos, rugby polos, even tying a sweater around your shoulders creates this V shape at your neck which gives the illusion of an elongated face. As opposed to, just wearing a crewneck which could exaggerate a round face.
Similarly, when utilizing the art of layering you also can create a V shape on your torso which gives the appearance of board shoulders and a smaller waist - which we all love. This can be done by layering a cardigan over a tank or even just a button down over tank and only buttoning the last few buttons.
Now I know what you’re thinking. “Sunny, layering in the hot months is just criminal”. Sure, but hear me out. We have some options guys.
First, depending on where you are going and how comfortable you are with exposing your chest - you could just wear nothing under your shirt. Slutty is very in for 2024.
However, if conservative is more your style - try layering with a sheer tank or maybe even a perforated one. A) it will allow for ventilation and B) I think its actually more fun than just wearing a plain white ribbed tank.
Master The Half Tuck
I love this styling nuance. It is so flattering on bigger guys. I also think its chic in general. Something about the asymmetry makes the look more interesting.
Middle Button Only
I can’t figure out the science behind it but something about only buttoning the middle button of your shirt is so cool to me in the spring/summer. And I think its a great styling hack for bigger guys.
Jewelry Jewelry Jewelry
GET IN THE JEWELRY GAME. Especially for the spring summer when you are wearing short sleeves and open collars - you have all this real estate to fill up, do so with jewelry. Layer your necklaces, wear multiple rings, stack bracelets. Jewelry is such an easy why to show some personality in your look when you feel like your clothing options are limited.
The Anti Loafer Movement
That headline is dramatic. A loafer is a classic and will absolutely never go out of style. However, I am a little over it. Especially for spring/summer. I think its time we switch it up a bit. Here are three shoes that give loafer without giving loafer (wtf does that even mean, Sunny?).
