Honestly, who better to turn to for summer sartorial inspiration than Dickie Greenleaf?! If you have no idea who I am talking about, please stop reading this and go watch “The Talented Mr. Ripley” (1999).
Dickie Greenleaf is the patron saint of summer style. He is the personification of dolce far niente. His clothes encapsulate so well his self confidence and aptitude for leisure and luxury. Even his accessories add exactly the right kind of sprezzatura.
If Dickie Greenleaf is you summer aesthetic goals, lets discuss how to embrace his classic style… but make it 2024.
Simple clean lines and Riviera chic is what we are aiming for with this capsule wardrobe. We’ll start with breaking it down into 4 tops, 4 bottoms, and 2 shoes - all of which can combine seamlessly and cohesively.
TOPS
For tops, we want to go for summer knits, wide spread collars and linen shirts.
BOTTOMS
For bottoms, we’ll go for more linen, a chino and shorts (5 in inseam at most). The quintessential 50’s style is a high waisted pant, so I picked one high waisted chino and one high waisted pair of shorts. The other two picks should sit at your waist.
SHOES
We are going to keep it simple with the shoes, just a slipper and an espadrille will do.
ACCESSORIES
Gold rings, great watches, sunglasses and fedoras - Dickie’s accessories really add to his whole effortlessly cool guy vibe. At first glance, they seem simple; however, with time you realize they are so genuinely and uniquely him. In the spirit of that, I think you should find some unique accessories at your local markets or thrift store. Maybe even something from your father’s closet. Something with a story, something so very ~you~.
STYLING
The key aspect we are trying to capture here is ease.
With tops: You want to go for messy but thoughtful. Buttons mostly undone and sleeves rolled up.
With bottoms: Dickie loved a rolled up pant. Something about the cropped pant does give relaxed.
With shoes: No socks. Defiantly no socks. Nothing says carefree quiet like an exposed ankle.
A Very Dickie Greenleaf Coded Brand
To end, I must introduce you to Scott Fraser Collections. If you have been following me for a while, you have certainly heard me talk about SFC. The whole brand is very 50’s/60’s inspired with hints of Riviera style. There is so much to love about SFC, but I especially love that you can custom make your pants. They have 5 trouser options and 1 shorts options. You can select the fabric, waistband details and the leg finish. It’s perfect.
This one was fun. As always, thank you for being here and supporting me in this way xo.
